Mathilde Kschessinska - Dancing with her Students in Paris c1920s? HD
It is possible that this is film of famed Russian Prima Ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg Mathilde Kschessinska (1872-1971) dancing. I have a feeling this may not be the case but I just can’t let go of the idea! Famed as much for her affairs with the future Nicholas II and the Grand Dukes Sergei Mikhailovich and his cousin Andrei Vladimirovich as for her dancing, Kschessinska obtained the title of Prima Ballerina in 1896 only through her influence at the Imperial Russian Court and against the wishes of Marius Petipa, who created only a small number of roles on the dancer. The talking head in this French documentary from where this footage comes speaks of Kschessinska opening a dance school in Paris - this occurred in the 1920s when the ballerina was in her fifties. The woman in the footage could possibly be the young-looking Kschessinska. Certainly she bears a strong resemblance to the ballerina and is in traditional Russian dress, teaching ballet students. The commentator talks of Mathilde Kschessinska together with the Russian actress and film director Olga Preobrazhenskaya (not to be confused with the ballerina Olga Preobrajenska) re-vitalising the Russian style. If I had to make a call I suspect the woman here is a teacher in Kschessinska’s studio or perhaps this is just generic footage of Russian style dancing being taught. Just tell me I am wrong - but enjoy!
