DRY: 6 meanings! HD

12.04.2020
The word DRY has many meanings! People often think that one sign = one word with one meaning, but this is not true. One English word can have many meanings! In this video, viewers see a real-life clip, then a Deaf presenter describing the clip as if to a child. The on-screen sentences are not ASL translations - they are reading opportunities related to the clips and ASL descriptions. For ASL translation, voice-overs are available. Voice-over text: Click the three dots (...) UNDER the YouTube video and Open transcript. Easily "pick up" both reading/English and American Sign Language (ASL). This video gives a language experience, not a lesson. Look for more videos like this on the Read with ASL YouTube channel! Sentences on screen are reading opportunities, not ASL translations. I use American Sign Language to communicate. And just like you enjoy reading until you get stuck on something and don’t understand, I can help, because I can read that and change it into ASL.” Dog bath video Voiceover: Jennifer Alford Dogs can get really dirty. We’ll put them in the shower, scrub them down, and then when we finish, we’ll pick them up and take them out. What do dogs typically do? They will shake themselves off to dry off and then we’ll grab a towel to dry them off the rest of the way. Text: She washed the dog, then dried her with a towel. Desert video Voiceover: Julie K. Balassa “The desert landscape was dry as a bone. There was not a tree in sight, not a flower. It was completely bare, bone dry.” Text: Deserts are dry, so most plants can’t grow. Dried fruit video Voiceover: Amy Zesigera “Do you know how to make dried fruit? Pieces of fruit are placed, and the fruit shrinks as the sun dries it. It’s ready to eat now and tastes delicious!” Text: Dried fruit tastes delicious! Clothesline video Voiceover: Diane Riddick “Using clothespins, I hung the freshly washed sheets on the line outside to dry. The breeze blowing through them dried them quickly.” Text: The wind and sun are drying the sheets. Water plant video Voiceover: Linda Diehl-Callaway “A potted flower can bloom in soil that is not dry. One woman takes care to water her potted flower to keep the soil from drying out. She knows that without that water, her flower would dry up because of the dry soil.” T
