VMO Strengthening & Why You Should Avoid Wall Squats
Without a doubt one of the WORST exercises ever shown to someone with knee pain or patella tracking problems is the Swissball Wall Squat with a ball between your knees to supposedly strengthen the VMO! Swissball Wall Squats are a great exercise if done correctly, unfortunately this is rarely the case as people completely misunderstand the point and exactly what the real problem is. The VMO by the way is such a small and very lazy muscle that is very reliant on many factors such as pelvic alignment that are controlled by the glutes, hip flexors and abdominal muscles. To focus on one small muscle that has no influence over the kinetic link or chain is just a waste of time. The only thing worse would be to find an exercise that makes this muscle imbalance and faulty movement even worse and that is exactly what this exercise does when taught the way most people do it.
