Top 5 Things I Miss From France. HD
Twitter | DeSinaasappelen Since leaving France I have found myself homesick. Here are the top 5 things I miss from France. 1.) Our house- The house that we bought in France was our dream, it was supposed to be the house we would grow old together in, however life happened, and we had to more. I loved it. It was a French farm house. There was a court yard, independent building, and huge yard, with fruit tree. We had the giant cherry tree, and we’d eat them till we got sick. I’d make jelly, pie, pickled cherries, vodka cherries, anything that could be made with them. I was very disappointed when we had to leave that house. It was the first house we bought as a couple. If the wall could talk, there would be some epically happy, and not so happy stories. 2.)My host family. By American standards they are still close by, since they only live 7 hours away. However they use to be only 2 hours away. Sadly distance isn’t judged by my standards, they use European standards and that is REALLY far away. Of course we have skype and facebook, but I do miss the ability of being able to go over for dinner, whenever. 3.) My little town. I lived in a suburb of a smaller town. My little community had 18 houses. It was cute because my neighbors didn’t talk to one another because the other side of “town” was too far away. I miss my bakery, pizza parlor, town hall, kebab truck, and grocery store. I knew all the people who worked there since I saw them all the time. We knew each other so well and would ask each other how the other was doing. It was sad when we decided to move, because I felt like I was leaving my extended family. 4.) Variety of fresh produce. France is the perfect place to grow crops because the whole country is naturally irrigated by 4 rivers. So each area will be known for a dish and thing that is grown there. This means going to the supermarket is epic. There are always a variety of lettuces, potatoes, onions, carrots, apples, grapes, the list is endless. It can be an overwhelming experience. However after getting used to that, and always having huge fresh produce sections, it is just sad going grocery shopping in Belgium. I only have 4 lettuce types if I want to make a salad, compared to the 20 I had before. 5.) Wine – I am very happy to try beer in Belgium and learn about that. However it does throw me a bit, when I am offered a refreshing beer, instead of wine. It is an oh yeah I’m not in France anymore. Also there is more options than I am used to in terms of wine origin in Belgium, than there was in France. I can’t lie, I am a bit of a snob now. I don’t understand why they bother because the only good wine comes from France, which is so French of me.
