Goosewing Hewing Axe Restoration HD
This beautiful Wörder & Pandel goosewing hewing axe is one of the latest additions to my collection of woodworking hand tools. I made a new handle from ash. Some may spot the grain orientation is perpendicular to the most ideal orientation but it is the best I could do with the wood I had and since this is not a high impact tool it should hold up fine. As you can see, I started out with a sculptural design for the handle, but refined it in the end to improve the ergonomics. The axe head was in good condition and only needed a good clean, a de-rust and a new edge. I used a wire wheel to take the rust off and sharpened with a belt sander and Japanese waterstones. I uses some scraps of padauk, a beautiful red wood, to make the wedges I used. I had planned to use this axe during a local museum/woodworking event, but sadly this event was canceled. This left me without a proper opportunity to test the axe, so it will have to wait. But I am sure I will use it in the future. For now it looks glorious on the shopwall.
