370 year-old Seongyojang of Gangneung was a private house of a noble-class family during the Joseon Period. A visitor to the house can feel the philosophy kept by its owners who took delight in exchange of dialogues with other people in natural surroundings. The small entrance is said to have intended not to make visitors feel small entering the imposing-looking house. Hwallaejeong Pavilion and Yeonhwadang Hall were places where the owners of the house mingled with a stream of visitors, enjoying the beautiful natural scenery together. Dongbyeoldang Hall was the place where they got together with visiting relatives. Yeonjidang Hall was a building built for bereaved women of the family. The owners of the house used to distribute grains kept in the shed generously to neighbors in times of difficulty. Seongyojang is a house open to visitors in the middle of natural surrounding. People there knew how to exchange friendship with others.
