I enjoy this because you can setup blitzes in 1 to 2 steps. How to Blitz: I use Cover 3 but this works from anything- 1. Base Align 2. Edge Rush the D Line 3. Blitz either the left or right LB and re-blitz the D End to the side of the blitz The only key here is the edge rush and blitzing the LB. You do not have to base align if the LB is in position. EXAMPLE: Your opponent calls Trips, your LBs to the trip side will spread that way leaving the weak side LB right next to the D Line in perfect blitz position. So if you wanted to send him you really are only doing 2 things, edge rushing and blitzing the LB. Blitzing the D End is the quickest of all steps. Double Edge Blitz To do the double edge blitz simply add these steps: 1. Base Align 2. Edge Rush the D Line 3. Blitz both LBs and reblitz both D Ends Coverage and Disguise: This is where you will really succeed. Lets go over different ideas for coverage and disguising and faking blitzes. 2 Man Under: I always run a max coverage with 2 Man Under but there is a trick to help your LBs play better man coverage even against WRs. Either Base align or bring the LBs on Slot WRs to the edge as if you were doing to blitz. EX: 2 Man Under vs 4 WR Spread I would manually bring the left of screen OLB to the edge of the line and then take the middle LB on the other WR and bring him to the edge. The right OLB will be responsible to help the CB deep. Then drop D Ends or D Tackles in Zones and roam the field with the LB who had the man assignment on the RB. This way it seems like you are blitzing but really your in man. When you bring the LBs inside they play sticky man coverage even on corner and out routes. If you ask me they actually play better... Cover 3 Disguise: Since the 4-4 is weak to spread defenses you want to be able to hide whats happening and trick opponents. For example, if you base align the OLB will leave the Slot WR but if you substitute him blitzing and move a MLB to where he would be blitzing from you can still have the OLB playing coverage outside in flats and purples. Once you establish you do this, and it looks like an obvious blitz, you can start dropping max coverage with an extra yellow zone or extra purples. All you want to do is show your opponent that either you know how to blitz and will hit him if he doesnt block, or trick him with max coverage into letting his RB run a route. Then you can alternate blitz and coverage from the same blitz look and still defend spread WRs. Other Coverages: 2 Deep is a good coverage. Since you cannot play a traditional cover 2 this is their answer. The coverage is a good play for run defense as well as you have all 4 LBs and 4 D line plus the safety to attack the run. The Only problem is you have to run deep because there is no deep help. Another Blitz: Zone Blitz is a very intense
