Themes from La La Land: Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra Music by Justin Hurwitz arr. Michael Wang JE‘17 Sweeping theaters in late 2016 and the winningest film of 2017, La La Land is the triumphant sophomore effort of director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), a big-screen homage to early American musicals. This whirlwind summary of main themes from the movie is intended to match its frenetic transitions from one fantastical mood to the next, while maintaining the instrumental glue that holds the soundtrack together: the piano. The solo part is originally arranged for John Baxter BK ’17, DPops superfan turned keyboardist and arranger extraordinaire, and self-proclaimed Romanticism aficionado. As I am a graduating senior, this is my final arrangement for DPops. I hope you enjoy this short rhapsody in adieu. Program Notes by Michael Wang
