The Major scale is the most important scale you can learn to understand music theory, chord and scale composition. Starting the scale on different degrees gives you seven modes Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aolian Locrian All these scale have unique interval properties and can be exploited to sound good over certain backing chords.
