IELTS Writing 2: How to Score Higher http://goo.gl/CAcKPL The first technique that will help you score higher on the writing part of the IELTS exam is to hedge your essay. Hedging simply means “to enclose.” In other words, hedging helps to avoid massive sweeping generalizations in your writing. Hedging will help make your writing sound more academic, it will increase your word count, and it will increase the amount of grammar structures you use in your writing. All of these things will improve your overall writing score on the exam. In order to hedge your essay, go through the essay and eliminate phrases including the word “all.” Try to explain what exactly you are referring to instead of grouping everything into the category of “all.” Hedging your document will ensure that your writing is academic, clearly written, and understandable to the grader. Hedging is a very useful technique to implement into your essay writing. Read on for a quick recap! 0:41 The three advantages of hedging: First, it makes your essay sound more academic. Second, it increases the amount of words you use. Third, it increases the amount of grammar structures you’re using. 1:21 Hedging comes from an old saying back in the UK, and it basically means “enclosed” or “to enclose.” 1:56 In the writing sense, it means avoiding making massive sweeping generalizations!!! 2:18 Using words like “everywhere,” “all,” “all the time,” and “always,” even if you are assuming, makes you look 100% certain all the time. 3:36 So, how do you avoid this? You can keep it within a certain limit and make it acceptable. If you say “practically all,” then it sounds more realistic. You can also use a different grammar structure and gain points by using a little bit of extra care. Another way to identify the hedge is if we use “will,” and this is exactly the same as using “all”—100% certain. By getting rid of these assumptions and hedging your essay, it makes it sound a million times more academic and, of course, more accurate. Good luck, and enjoy the video!
