Afghanistan - Effects of Taliban capture

T/I: 10:14:08 GS 10:27:25 Kabul has undergone dramatic changes since the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban militia captured the Afghan capital on September 27. Most residents have welcomed some of those changes - relative peace, a halt to the bombings and the dramatic drop in local crime. However, many complain of the hardship brought on by over a month of the extreme laws imposed by the Taliban in the name of Islam. Women have been banned from working and, despite assurances, their salaries for the first month of their unemployment would be brought to their homes, many are still waiting to be paid. Women have been told they must wear veils in public and will be punished if they do not. Trade has also been badly affected. In the street markets, vendors say business is slow because no-one has any money.
