Abandoned Coal Town Comes To Life, Amtrak Train Stops At Passenger Train Station, Thurmond Trains 4K HD

Trains in Thurmond, West Virginia pass directly in front of the abandoned brick buildings only a few feet away. A fast coal train passes and Amtrak stops at the historic train station on its way to Cincinnati, Ohio. We see the old steam locomotive coaling tower and railroad maintenance was going on so I showed the long pieces of rail up close that were being replaced. Thurmond is a national park and the buildings are being restored. This is an excellent tourist location and a perfect place for railfans. I went there with my friend Scott ( gambit 1960 ). We got there just after 11:30am and left around 9pm. In that 9+ hours we saw 2 coal trains, one grain train, Amtrak Cardinal and a maintenance of way train that was spraying weeds along the tracks. RJ Corman Railroad also has a branch that goes off the CSX mainline in Thurmond and goes to a coal loadout in Pax, West Virginia. No trains ran on the RJ Corman line on this Friday. Amtrak makes 3 round trips a week on this line between New York and Chicago. This is the second least used stop on Amtraks national system. Thurmond was the least used but Sanderson, Texas recently took the number one spot. I am told that Amtrak stopped here to drop off 2 passengers. The movie "Matewan" was partially shot here also.
