DIANE SILVER : ARTICLES OF FAITH HD
A new Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Quotidian presents Diane Silver’s Articles of Faith, an installation that realizes a poignant and highly personal conceptualization of pilgrimage. Comprised of paintings and embroidered works on hand-dyed linen and hemp and hung like tapestries, Silver creates abstract, yet deeply emotive Stations of the Cross, mirroring Christ’s own pilgrimage through death and resurrection. These works are not blatantly religious, however, they illuminate Silver’s devout awareness of her own evolution as a woman and an artist. The power of Articles of Faith lies here and in the cosmic overview Silver offers as allegories of landscape and faith. The Stations paintings vacillate between bird’s eye views of earthly landscapes and views of the heavens that are reminiscent of ancient stories of constellations and stars woven into mythology and religion. Silver sees the heavens as both a mirror of human life – all of the cosmic energy encapsulated in us, and as a landscape of raw potency teeming with color, matter and volatility. Her paintings reflect the material weight of these various articulations and of her own movement through and within them. Silver has embroidered the seven deadly sins onto un-stretched canvas, a reminder and a prophecy about human potential. She is more hopeful than not, locating herself in both the highs and lows of life’s possibilities. The entire installation is hung tightly together to immerse the viewer in the experience of Silver’s journey through her practice as an artist. She shares the emotional awareness of expectancy and searching in the layers of paint, dust, and yarn, and rightly assumes that viewers are on a pilgrimage of their own. For a brief moment, like life itself, these experiences collide, intersect and conjoin in a leap of faith. For more info on Eric Minh Swenson visit his website at thuvanarts.com.
