Orthopedic Surgeon From Westchester Medical Center Explains Career Inspiration HD
Dr. Luks explains the inspiration behind becoming an orthopedic surgeon, which include his background in sports, his relationship with his orthopedist growing up, and the joy that comes from improving quality of life for patients. Howard J. Luks, MD: My name is Howard Luks. I am an orthopedic surgeon just North of New York City, Westchester County, New York. I run the sports medicine program at Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College. I tend to focus mostly on the knee and the shoulder. Everyone asked me why I chose to become an orthopedic surgeon. I chose to become an orthopedic surgeon mainly because I knew my orthopedist growing up better than I knew my pediatrician. Whether it was because I skied into a tree and ended up in his office with a fractured tibia, or because I was never able to complete a season in playing basketball, or baseball, or tennis because of an ankle fracture, a knee injury or a meniscus tear. I became very intrigued by him. I found him very endearing and I enjoyed him far more than I enjoyed my pediatrician who just wanted to stick needles in my arm. I had a great time with my orthopedist. I learned a lot from him and he is the reason why I am an orthopedist today. I love coming to work each day. I love working with patients. It is an absolute honour to be able to work with you in an attempt to improve your quality of life, to educate you about what is bothering you, and to decide what treatment regimen is best for you. I treat you as a patient. I do not treat your MRI or your x-ray findings. To have you come back in my office, to give me a hug, to watch you dance a little jig because your knee pain is now alleviated gives me all the joy that I need and is the reason why I come back to work each and everyday with a big smile on my face Learn more about Dr. Luks: http://www.howardluksmd.com/about/about-me/
