Studio Sound for $70 – MXL 990 Microphone Review HD
MXl 990 Patriot Edition: https://www.amazon.com/MXL-Patriot-Limited-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B01HKA9ZMG/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=ericks04-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=4532460f1726aaf27f2a6fad80ca3e8f&creativeASIN=B01HKA9ZMG (I get a small kickback when you use my assoicate link) There are tons of microphones in the under $100 category, ranging from the YouTuber favorite Blue Snowball, to the professional quality Audio Technica AT2020. It’s a crowded space for microphones, and it takes a lot to stand out. For just the current price of just $70, the MXL 990 provides outstanding sound as well as excellent build quality at an unbeatable price. First off, this is an XLR microphone meaning you’ll need an external audio interface for this to work. That may sound like a hassle, but the improvement in sound quality you’ll gain over a USB mic completely justifies going XLR. If you’d like to know which Audio Interface I use and recommend you can check out my Audient ID14 review here. The MXL 990 sounds far better than many of the other mics I’ve tested in this price bracket, and compared to my Blue Spark which you’re hearing me on now, provides a very similar sound. The microphone is made of metal, not the cheap plastic you’ll find on many mics in this price range, and has a fair bit of weight to it giving me a sense of both sturdiness, and quality. The mic features a -10DB pad which is helpful if you’re recording a very loud sound source. I’ll be focusing on voice over recording mainly in this review, so if you’re looking for an instrument or vocals test, check out some of the other reviews here on YouTube. Hear is a sound test I recorded with the mic featuring minimal processing so you can hear how it really sounds: I’ve used this microphone for the podcast I run on my second channel, and have been very impressed with the quality at which this mic picks up my voice. It’s a condenser microphone, so it’s quite sensitive and if you’re recording in a loud space, will pick up all of the background noise. The benefit to this sensitivity is that you are able to pick up the human voice with precise accuracy, and you won’t have to worry about getting that over processed radio sound you get from many other cheap mics. Compared to a blue yeti or snowball, this microphone sounds worlds better when hooked up to a decent pre amp.
