A passenger elevator and a freight elevator side by side in harmony HD
We are in an old building on the corner of 21st Street and Borden Avenue in Long Island City in Queens, where we have the opportunity to take a ride in a pair of old elevators; one of which is a passenger elevator, the other being a freight elevator. Right off the bat, one thing that is interesting about these two elevators is that they share the same elevator shaft. The passenger elevator is extremely small, has two doors, and a capacity of only 1000 pounds. I am uncertain as to who made it or how old it is, but it has had some mechanical upgrades in the past, including a modern door chime, floor indicators, and floor buttons. However, the doors and the rest of the cab are pretty much untouched. The freight elevator is just as old, if not older than the passenger elevator. It is manually driven by a pair of buttons on the wall. For some reason, there is a 2 or 3 second delay between when you push the button, and when the elevator actually moves. This elevator does not self level, and is quite annoying if you overshoot the floor you are going to. This elevator has a capacity of 4000 pounds and is top driven, as is the passenger elevator, but is faster than the passenger elevator. Enjoy the sound of the whine of the motor as it moves this elevator, as well as the click of the relays as I try to move up and down to spot the doors properly.
