Rob DelPomo - Kid Charlemagne Steely Dan (Cover) HD

The challenge to Rob here was to come up with an original drum track to a classic tune. We worked on musically progressing the tune by starting with a basic framework for the sections and then expanding on the motifs. There was no reference to the original track throughout the process although some ideas do sound somewhat like the original. Bottom line is, you take what is in your repertoire and use those tools to create a musical part, ONLY playing for the music. Putting yourself, LAST, putting the music, groove/feel, time, FIRST. No need to prove to ANYONE how "good" you feel you are. Its ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!! Rob is a SHINING EXAMPLE of this. Has A LOT in the tank but only uses it when the creation of music calls for it. He NEVER lets go of the groove, even through his fills, he grooves. GROOVING THROUGH THE FILLS....now THERE is a concept. These are core concepts that are "the code of drumming" for me if you will, and what I preach OVER AND OVER to my students. Rob embraces these concepts and applies them flawlessly here. A true musician, again, putting the MUSIC FIRST, checking his ego at the door, and NEVER considering himself before the music. GREAT GREAT STUDENT!! VERY PROUD OF WHAT HE HAS ACCOMPLISHED THUS FAR!! - Fran POOR ROB!! Recording on the "student" kit, only one crash!! BUT HE KILLS IT!! Its obvious more cymbals need to be added to that kit! In spite of it all, GREAT WORK ROB!!
