The Power of Doubling HD

There is a very old story that goes something like this. A wise man in India invented the game of chess. The king of India instantly fell in love with the game and became an instant chess addict. The king was very grateful and wanted to reward the wise man at the next feast. The wise man proposed the following reward. "Take a chess board and place a single grain of rice on the first square. Then, on the next square place two grains of rice. On the third square, double the amount of rice that is in the second square. Keep doing this until the chess board is filled." The king though about this and did some quick math in his head and agreed to the reward. The king figured that he got away cheap. Maybe one bag of rice at most. This proved to be a major mistake. In this video, we will use Excel to see why doubling and exponents are very powerful and can lead to very large numbers.
