Here is how to light your videos like a pro even without the proper equipment. I like the look of soft light, something about it feels cinematic and its easy on the eyes. To achieve this I took cheap light stand which I will clamp a white scrim onto. A white bed sheet can work as well. For the light I’m using this floor lamp with daylight LED bulbs and place that behind the reflector, This is our key light, which spreads the light out and wraps around the face. I like contrast between the lit side and shadow side on my face fall, I’m not a fan of too much fill light. Depending on the shot you may want to add a backlight to add separation between you and the background. I took a clamp light with another one of the LED bulbs clipped on some grease paper as diffusion. Again I don’t like a strong back light, it screams amateur, in movies the backlight is usually very subtle. Let’s try another setup this time we will use a black background. Clamp the black side of the reflector onto a stand. The key to a rich dark background is to not let any light hit the backdrop, you want to move the subject as far away from the background as possible. It is difficult in a small space, but you can make it work. I using a foam board to bounce the light coming from the clamp light, As a result we have a softer light and reduces the intensity. Any light that hits the background will not be as bright, but there is still some light on the background. We can fix that in post by lowering the shadows to get a pure black background. A trick If you want a wider angle is to film more of the background, its ok that the edges are not covered, we can mask out the edges and feather it a bit, this will work as long as you don’ t move past the backdrop.
