You may think you know the Man of Steel, but much like (your mom’s exercise buddy who insists he’s just a friend) how well do you really know him? Did you know there’s some strong evidence that the Nazis might have helped in Superman’s creation and rise to fame? Here’s how: Many critics have attributed the name Superman to Nietzsche’s idea of the Übermensch, which the Nazis perverted into the Aryan “master race”. So maybe it’s not a coincidence that the American superhero was invented by two Jewish high school students in 1933 – the same year that the Nazi party came to power in Germany. Funny that the dark-haired, Kansas-bred Superman first appeared when Hitler said blond-haired Germans were superior. But there’s more: In wartime comics and radio programs, the US government used Superman to promote American ideals. He even attacks a German U-boat and physically scolds Hitler on several comic covers. While Superman’s creators never confirmed these theories, we can’t help but assume they had some positive democratic agenda by combating the Nazis through pop culture. Well, gotta fly!
