Made in Germany | Sauerkraut for Italy

17.05.2008
German sauerkraut, Christmas stollen from Cologne, and bratwurst from Thüringen are all things Italians enjoy eating. Italy, the culinary nation par excellence, is the second most mportant foreign market for German food producers. In light of rising costs for raw materials, sales abroad are becoming indispensable for smaller producers, because in Germany, the profit margins are lower than just about anywhere. Buyers for discount supermarkets like Lidl, Aldi and Rewe set the prices. In other countries, high-quality German products can still make good profits. At least, that is what Sebastian Asmus found out at the food trade fair in Parma, where he met employees of the Hengstenberg Company. They, too, sell their sauerkraut and pickled gherkins in Italy.
