2016 Infiniti QX80 | CarGurus Impressions HD

With minivans perpetually living in the least-cool driveways, full-size SUVs are the de facto choice of shoppers needing space for passengers and groceries and enough towing power to get the sailboat down to the marina. While a handful of old-school body-on-frame options still exist in the budget-friendly realm, shoppers looking for a heaping helping of luxury will need to open their wallets. Of all choices, however, it looks like the 2016 Infiniti QX80 might best represent the balance between opulence and value. The QX80 uses the same architecture as the Nissan Armada, although the 5.6-liter V8 has been boosted up to 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. While this helps deliver 8,500 pounds of towing capacity, it also results in pretty terrible fuel-economy figures: 14 mpg city/19 highway/16 combined with all-wheel drive and 14/20/16 with rear-wheel drive. Starting at $63,250, the QX80’s price undercuts everything in its class. Cadillac’s Escalade ranges from $72,970 to $91,950, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class runs from $67,050 all the way up to $124,100, and the single-trimmed Lexus LX 570 commands an incredible starting MSRP of $88,880. Compared to the competition, even the $88,850 QX80 Limited seems like a deal. Shoppers enjoy plenty of luxuries in the Limited, although Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not among them. Leather upholstery, ventilated driver’s and front passenger’s seats, dual rear video monitors, and a 13-speaker Bose stereo keep passengers comfortable, while autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a surround-view camera system keep them safe.
