L-arginine, which qualifies as a non-essential amino acids since our bodies produce it naturally, has garnered attention for its claimed ability to boost muscle growth and increase blood flow to generate a killer pump. L-arginine can be obtained through dietary sources, including whole wheat, seeds, nuts, dairy products, red meat, poultry, and fish. L-arginine’s benefits come from its critical roles in protein synthesis and serving as a precursor to nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator. L-arginine also signals muscle cells to release growth hormone and promotes fat metabolism. The product of all this are those lean, well-toned muscles that every gym goer craves. By reducing fat stores underneath the skin and promoting muscle growth, L-arginine can also increase overall fitness and improve strength levels. And lastly, L-arginine helps bolster the immune system by mopping up free radicals and increasing the effectiveness of the cells in the immune system. If you’re going to supplement with L-arginine, a good starting dose is anywhere from 2-5 grams right before and after your workout. Since L-arginine can produce a number of side effects ranging from abdominal pain to nausea to diarrhea, it’s best to start off with a low dose and slowly increase over time.
