Did I make a Mistake? Splitting Elm for Longbow Staves. I prepare an Elm Stave for Quick Drying. I recently posted a video about splitting an elm log into bow staves and I received lots of useful comments about the way I did it. Thank you very much to all who took time and trouble to guide and advise me in the working of elm wood - much appreciated! Perhaps though, based on comments and private messages, I may have made a mistake in splitting the log. It appears that elm can easily twist if split and left to dry - a mistake that can result in spoiled staves. My staves do show a slight twist. So have I ruined my chances of making some bows from my elm? I decide to press on and work one half of the log into a slightly oversized bow stave which will be rapidly dried ready for bow making in around a month from now - all being well. Will it twist? Only time will tell! I have been asked if Dutch elm disease, a fungal infection that can destroy any kind of elm, occurs in the UK and answer that question during the video.
