Nightmare on Elm Street! Misadventures with Elm Longbow Staves. Some Lessons Learned! There are many pleasures to be had self-learning skills such as bowmaking - but there are many mistakes and hard lessons to be learned on the way. Four months ago I felled a twenty five year old English elm tree with the intention of making several longbows from this fine bow wood. I had never worked or used elm previously and have learned many lessons during the splitting and seasoning of this wood. Some pieces have warped, some have split - the only piece so far to have shown no signs of problems is a piece of elm that I worked to rough, oversized bow dimensions, coated in animal fat and clamped to a wooden form. Fingers crossed that it stays that way!
