(Power of Water Erosion And Erosion Animation) SCIENCE EXPERIMENT Crazy Chris is checking into erosion and shows you how to see erosion right in your own bathroom! Objective: To understand how erosion works. Materials Needed: ~ Hard Bar of Soap ~ Shower Step 1) Place a hard bar of soap just to the side of your shower drain. Step 2) Take you daily showers and observe the soap each week. The more people in your home taking a shower the faster this will happen. HOW DOES THIS WORK? Water erosion happens when the flow of water causes sand soil, or rock to chip away at the earths surface. Water erosion usually starts out when the force of rain drops causes soil or rock to break off tiny peices. These tiny peices are carried in flowing water and tiny grains of sand, soil or rock can chip into hard rocks breaking off tiny peices of that rock as well as rocks that get pushed along in the flow of the water. Just like how the soap erodes from the flowing water, minerals in your shower water chip away at the soap, reshaping the bar of soap over the coarse of weeks. In fact if you left the soap thier it would fully erode away completly. Given enough time flowing water from rivers can cut huge trenches in the rock forming canyons. The colorado river has been eroading rock for about 6-10 million years forming the grand canyon. Moutains, Cliffs and Shore Lines can also be eroded by water in wave form which smash into rock. These waves have so much force they cause the rock to bend and crack. When more waves slam into the rock it creates high air pressure inside these cracks, which causes the rocks to split even more. With continued, slaming of waves aginst these split rocks eventualy cause peices to break off the sides of moutains and cliffs.
