[TV ZONE] Counting the stars at Cheom-Seong-Dae HD

This astronomical observatory tower was build during the reign of Queen Seon-Dok in the Shilla Kingdom period and is among all the buildings that remain from that time the only one which was completely preserved in its original form. The layers of the tower, built from 362 granite bricks representing the days of the year and the changes of the seasons. The sole window towards the south serves as a reference point to trace the movement of the sun. Through these facts we can understand the meaning of this building and tell that it was used as an astronomical observatory. Some 1300 years ago the people of this region stepped up the 9 meter high Cheom-Seong-Dae to observe the movement of the stars and to understand the meaning of the universe. Surviving some 1300 years of history, here in the ancient Shilla capital of Gyeongju this astronomical observatory still stands tall without a change.
