New Star Wars Spinoff Writer Hints At Possible Plot Subscribe Now! ► http://bit.ly/SubClevverMovies The 2016 standalone Star Wars film remains a mystery, but the film’s new writer could be a big clue on the film’s possible focus. So far, the only thing we know about Disney’s first Star Wars spinoff movie is that it will arrive on December 16th, 2016, roughly a year after The Force Awakens, but it won’t be a continuation of that story. We also know that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will helm the project and according to THR, About A Boy writer/director Chris Weitz has been brought on to work on the screenplay after original screenwriter Garry Whitta’s recent departure. There were also recent rumors that actresses like Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Rooney Mara, The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones and Fantastic Four’s Kate Mara were testing for the lead. Now, not much to go on, but with the studio testing for a female lead and Weitz having a strong background writing for female characters with credits that also include this March’s Cinderella, 2007’s The Golden Compass and directing The Twilight Saga: New Moon, signs are pointing to a film focusing on a female protagonist. Of course, the most famous female in the Star Wars Universe is of course Princess Leia, which seems the most logical choice, but would fans line up to see a Princess Leia movie? The jury is still out on that one, but taking a look at some of the creative talent’s other credits suggests what the theme of the film could be. Edwards, of course, directed last year’s Godzilla, but first made a name for himself writing and directing the 2010 low budget film Monsters, a post-apocalyptic tale following an alien invasion where giant monsters roam the Earth. Original spinoff writer Gary Whitta wrote several post-apocalyptic films including After Earth and The Book of Eli as well as several episodes of The Walking Dead and new writer Chris Weitz released the first book of a post-apocalyptic young adult novel last year titled, The Young World. All of these seem to point to a Star Wars film with a post-apocalyptic theme that will most likely focus on a female character.
