Unfortunately, what I did on TikTok got me kicked out of school, made me lose my boyfriend, and made me lose myself. Growing up, I never imagined I’d have anyone looking at me. Truthfully, I suffer from really bad social anxiety. Things like answering questions in class make me want to throw up. My hands shake, my head spins, and I feel like bolting out of the room. And don’t even get me started on presentations or hanging out in big groups! Because of that, I’ve really struggled making friends. When I was younger, I got made fun of a lot because I was “weird.” Which basically meant I would break out in a cold sweat if anyone so much as looked at me. Lucky for me, in high school, I met Lucas. Lucas was in my grade and he was just as shy as I was. The minute we met, it was like sparks were flying. We quickly started dating, and for a while, I felt like a princess. Except Lucas had friends. He hung out with them a lot, and it made me feel a little empty because I didn’t have anyone. I would sit on my phone for hours scrolling through TikTok, and sometimes, that made it worse. I hated seeing groups of girlfriends hanging out, laughing, and doing skits together. Feeling especially bad one night, I decided to make a TikTok of my own. The TikTok was a little skit about my social anxiety and having no friends. I thought it was a little funny, so I put it up and went to bed. When I woke up in the morning, the first thing I saw was a ton of follow requests on Instagram. I panicked for a minute, thinking someone had made a mean meme of me or something… but I didn’t see anything else. When I opened TikTok, my mouth fell to the floor. I’d gotten a million likes in just a few hours – and four times as many views.
