4 Mistakes of English Books about TENSE HD
This video is about tense. It covers four things about tense that people usually commit mistakes. For example- Question #1 What is Tense? In traditional books of English in Bangladesh what the definition is given that is not correct actually. The many books have been given the correct definition but this video takes the Longman’s definition as the best. Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics (page 290) says, “The relationship between the form of the verb and the time of the action or state it describes.” Question#2 How many kind of tense? There two kinds of tense in English- Present tense and Past tense. In Bangla language there are three kinds of tense because the verb form allows to make three kinds of tense but in English the verb form does not allow to make three kinds of tense. So in English there are only two kinds of tense, Present tense and Past tense. Question # 3 Aspect Every tense has four aspects. Aspect! Aspect is like the characteristics or features. For example Mr. John is hardworking, honest, strict and kind. So Mr. John has four characteristics but the person is one. We cannot say Mr. John is of four kinds. So tenses are of two kinds but every tense has four aspects. They are - Simple/Indefinite Progressive/Continuous Perfect Simple/ Perfect Perfect Progressive/ Perfect Continuous Question# 4 Can tense be called the soul of English language? Sometimes some books say, “Tense is called the soul of English language.” Is there reference of this saying? It is not found in any in any authentic books or in Google. This video attempts to discuss tense with authentic information so that our students can be enlightened correctly. The purpose of this video is to give correct information not to embarrass anybody or humiliate any writers.
