How Apache became a key player in the growth of the World Wide Web The first speaker was Dutchman Dirk-Willem van Gulik. Dirk-Willem is the founder of the Apache Software Foundation, and occupied different (technical) positions at several large companies. Nowadays, he is mainly concerned with open source software. Of course, he first discussed Apache. How could it grow from just a web server to what it is today? Then he talked about the industry and economy in general. With his in-depth presentation he set the tone for the rest of the evening. It soon became clear that we had lots of professional developers in the room. Dirk-Willem addressed solutions and problems with writing open source code, and clearly distinguished starting developers from hard core coders.
