Clint Walker, western hero supreme, stars with Vincent Price, horror movie superstar, and FORBIDDEN PLANET’s Anne Francis in the appropriately spooky title, MORE DEAD THAN ALIVE (1969). In a real change of pace role, Clint Walker is convicted murderer “Killer Cain.” Released from prison after 18 years, Clint wants to leave his bloody past behind and never touch a gun again. When he has difficulty landing a job, he’s hired by Vincent Price to headline a travelling gun show. Vincent’s former headliner, fast-shooting, over-acting Paul Hampton, becomes upset when he is replaced by Clint and is no longer #1. Opening the movie is a bloody prison break staged by former Tarzan Mike Henry. Still imprisoned Clint won’t participate resulting in most of the inmates being slaughtered. The escaped Henry wants revenge. Mike Henry was a terrific Tarzan, but his best role may be that of Junior Justice in SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. There’s even a bloody, Sam Peckinpah inspired slow-motion shootout toward the end of the film. It’s all a little bizarre for a western, filled with odd characterizations and shifting moods. After he made this film, Clint starred in a series of solid TV movies including YUMA, HARDCASE and THE BOUNTY MAN. Unfortunately, his return to series television a couple years later as KODIAK in 1974, only lasted half a season. But Big Clint Walker left us longtime fans with many seasons of CHEYENNE and a lot of other films to enjoy. MORE DEAD THAN ALIVE also showcases Vincent Price in one of his best last roles and Anne Francis is lovely as an artist and old friend of Clint’s.
