Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is the combination of a membrane process like ultrafiltration with a biological wastewater treatment process. Membrane Bioreactor is operated in similar way as to operate in a conventional activated sludge process but it do not required secondary clarification and tertiary treatment like sand filtration. Low-pressure membrane filtration, either microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF), is used for separation of effluent or treated water from activated sludge. But we have to provide adequate pre-treatment to prevent clogging of the membranes by debris, sand, fibres, hairs, or other extreme contents. The main advantages of MBR technology are : 1. Smaller footprint because of smaller reactor volume as a consequence of higher MLSS concentration and loading rate. 2. Decreased sludge production 3. Because of Membrane filtration, Higher and consistent effluent quality . The main disadvantages of Membrane Bioreactor are: • Expensive to Operate and install; • Because of fouling characteristic of membranes, Frequent membrane monitoring and maintenance.
