Achladeri Farm - Achladerifarm.blogspot.com On the island of Lesvos, called also as "the olive island" , at the bay of Kalloni, lies the farm of Achladeri. A farm with an area of 6,500 acres, where olive, pine, sea and thyme are combined with singular harmony and it is rightly described it as "the jewel of the island." The farm belongs to the Foundation of Apostole Simantiri and has a fairly strong presence in the social, economic and cultural life of the entire island. Since the early 19th century it has begun to flourish and produce many agricultural products, where the great benefactor of the island Apostole Simantiris properly utilized and expanded its activities beyond the island. In the mid of 20th century, there was the establishment of Practical Agricultural School of Achladeri and many scientists, agronomists, veterinarians and other young farmers or breeders apprenticed to school or practice of the Agricultural College. In the flourishing of Achladeri Farm, an important role played Efstratios Vetsas, Agronomist, who educated and trained new people and brought new methods of farming and animal husbandry. The Farm of Achladeri continuing the path to innovation and renewal, towards any new technological and scientific achievement, manages in 1990 to declare it as the first Organic Farm in Greece, bringing 20,000 trees to organic farming program. In 2006, the Simantiri Foundation, once again innovated and succeeded, in cooperating with the University of Ioannina, joining an innovative research project that is supervised by the General Secretariat for Research & Technology, Ministry of Development. The project studies the nutritional value of olive oil, therefore a modern chemical laboratory is created that will study and classify - according to their nutritional value- olive oils produced within the organic farm, even depending on the variety of olives. Also in the Farm, there is a mill with "cold pressed technology" for the oil produced and the visitor is able to participate in every stage of oil production from olive collection, pressing up and eventually standardization of organic olive oil.
