The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company and later by McDonnell Douglas is an American carrier-capable attack aircraft built for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The A-4 Skyhawk is one of the greatest jet aircraft ever to have served with the U.S Navy and U.S Marines. The A-4 Skyhawk was among the frontline of the US Navy and Marines for attack missions over Vietnam and still flies with some of the air forces of the world nearly 50 years after first entering service. The maiden flight of the A-4 Skyhawk took place on the 22nd of June 1954 and it went into service on October 1956. Primary users are the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, Israeli Air Force and the Argentine Air Force. There were approx. 2,960 A-4 Skyhawk produced between 1954 and 1979. The A-4 Skyhawk is still in active service but with non-U.S. users. Cost per unit is approx. 860,000 USD (average cost for first 500 units in 1950s).
