Making an Elder Bow. Part Two. The Puzzled Bowyer The beginnings of an elder flatbow? I want to start work on the elder stave but become anxious about the way forward. What bow design and dimensions to use? How wide, how thick, how long, what taper? So many questions. This is the realm of the novice bowyer working alone with a less than perfect stave of wood. No one to give face-to-face advice, no guide book, nothing. So I do my best to puzzle out a way forward by letting the wood tell me what to do. Eventually I find my way ahead and lay out a design to make a flatbow of sorts. I decide on some dimensions so that I can rough out the stave whilst its moisture content reduces toward the level where I can start work trying to be bend this elder bow. Part three to follow.
