The Axe Is Back Project - Restoring an old Axe

20.10.2012
I saw a few videos on restoring axes and it seem like a pretty fun and interesting project. I picked up this old, vintage, rusted axe at the swap meet for 5 bucks, it looked like a good candidate for a first attempt at restoring an old axe and my addition to the Axe is back project. It is an old Craftsman axe with a 24" handle I used a wire brush and dremel with a wire wheel to remove the rust, along with files and sand paper. It took some work getting rid of the rust and smoothing out some of the deeper pitting. I used a bench grinder on the end of the axe head to remove the mushrooming. I sanded down the handle, it had some deep stains in the wood. I applied several coats of Boiled Linseed oil to the handle. Cut a wedge to fit and secured the head back to the handle. I worked the edge with a file and the lansky puck sharpener to sharpen the axe. I was pleased with the results. thanks DAN
