[Sample answer] Q1 Some people say children should focus on only academics. But I don’t think so. School is not the place only for learning academics. Students can learn how to bond with others and how to survive after graduation. To survive in this world, they have to learn practical things. Let me tell you about my experience. Back in college, I had to live alone at the studio apartment near the campus. When I lived with my parents, I took my mom’s food for granted. But now, I have been still a hard time making food by myself. If I learned cooking skills at school, things might have been different. This is why I think they should learn practical skills at school. Q2 In the reading passage, it says instead of staff members, current students will be guided tours for high schoolers who are considering attending the school. This is because staff members are busy and current students are more likely to offer valuable insight. On top of that, the woman in the conversation agrees with it for the following two reasons. First, they are getting hectic. To be specific, whenever she went to the admission office, the staff members were busy working like answering the phone and doing interviews or something. Second, it is true that current students will offer a different perspective. To be more specific, staff members cannot answer everything like which is a quiet dorm room and which cafeteria is good. Q3 According to the reading passage, even if the project seems to be failed, they’ll increase their commitment to the project rather than give up. This is known as irrational commitment. On top of that, in the psychology class, the professor explains it by using an example. When he wanted to buy an old house, his wife didn’t like it because it was not in good condition. But he tried to convince his wife to buy it and decided to fix the house. However, there were a lot more problems in the house than he expected and he had to spend much money on it. Back then, there was doubt in his wife’s mind. But he didn’t give up and became more determined because he didn’t want his wife to think he was wrong. Q4 In the biology class, the professor explains two different types of underground adaptation. The first one is how to move underground through the dirt. For example, the mole has wide strong feet with big claws. The feet are like a shovel so it can dig the ground easily. The claws cut into the dirt, and then its broad feet throw the dirt behind the mole. So it can go forward quickly underground. The other one is to protect their body from the dirt. For instance, the mole has tiny eyes, and these eyes are covered with thin skin and hair on it. The hair protects the mole’s eyes from the dirt. The dirt particles around its eyes can slide by because of the hair. So the mole can keep digging underground. This video is another TOEFL Speaking practice test.
